I run a tiny site for my Businessand we use WordPress because it’s what I know. Anyway, the site is S L O W and I can’t figure out why. I know that turning on caching didn’t seem to help much and I hated it because it added a step every time I tweaked the css and wanted to see the results/result. See You..

Hi Aine,

We are in the business of helping folks migrate blog content (and even static site content to blog or content managed — most often to WP and from anything including MT and many others, even flat files). WP improves with every rendition and gets smoother and smoother.

I had a quick look around stumblers/blog. I see you are using the following:
“Protected by WP-SpamFree v2.1.0.9″

I have not used/seen this particular plug-in. You indicate that you are avoiding spam for the most part and so I’m curious what steps in addition to the above you are taking.

Always fun to learn and improve based on the experience of others.

I just now ran across this post… yeah, Mike, the Long Tail.

For what it’s worth, I switched to WP from MT sometime during the development of MT 3, years ago now. It seemed like every iteration of MT, I’d have a half dozen things to “fix” in the core code to make the blog work the way I wanted it to. After a while, I just got sick of fixing stuff I shouldn’t have had to fix. Well, that and the spam comment problem became insufferable on MT right about then.

I haven’t looked back since, and have no regrets about switching. And I don’t have spam comment problems anymore. Now days, when I fiddle with code, it’s fun, not work… as it should be.

Currently working on a move of an MT version 2.6 blog to wordpress. So old that data is in flat files, but we are able to handle the data migration from old blog platform to new. It is fun to be able to be of service to people like this. The person had quit blogging entirely because his version was outdated and he needed assistance making the data portable.

Simon says: “EE was a steep learning curve but so very powerful.” Isn’t that part of the point, why suffer through a learning curve. When we move people from MT to WP we find that the functional usability remains much the same for them from Moveable Type to WordPress. The net result is easier use on the platform, not a steep learning curve to work through.

Amazing post and comments. We’ve got to have witnessed 5 of the top ten longest-ever comments there.
Seriously though, as a slightly informed bystander, from reading the stuff, it set me off twiddling my blog which has got rid of annoying problems and speeded it up a bit… So thanks Mike, Paul and all the lesser comment-length mortals!
It’s WP 2.7 I use.

As a movable type consultant I’m on the side of Movable Type, though Word Press seems easier to use. From a consultant stand point you could do much more interesting stuff with Movable Type than with Word Press and another plus is that Word Press has a good number of well known security issues (see wikipedia and google).

Your article is very good and informative, but I wished I would have been here for you before you’ve switched over to word press :)

I am still running my site on MT331 and have decided not to move it to MT4 but to Expression engine – which I have made a start on. The import facility is great and I have transferred over all six blogs used to run my site, including all comments and keywords. EE2 is due out this year and I think it really will turn heads. EE was a steep learning curve but so very powerful.

What I canâ€™t believe is that Iâ€™ve reconsidered switching from Movable Type to Wordpress; because if I can in any way protract what appears to be MTâ€™s declension, Iâ€™ll be able to find an edgy, well-informed Clash of the Boffins like this one. Lord, when you nerds get mad, you get mad.
