Jets, Hydroplanes, and Beer

August 15th, 2004

The first weekend of August is a great time to come to Seattle. Not only is it sunny and beautiful, but the city also plays host to Seafair Weekend; an annual outdoor festival featuring two days of airshows by the Blue Angels, unlimited hydroplane races, and a big old floating boat party on Lake Washington. This year’s waterborne festivities resembled New Orleans during Mardi Gras more than any other year I can remember. Think beads. Lots of beads. I didn’t see one indecent exposure ticket getting written though, so perhaps Seattle cops have lightened up a little.

Anyway, I was planning on having a bunch of photos to post, but unfortunately I forgot to charge the Optio S and it ran out of batteries right after the Blue Angels show was over. Below are ten photos from the airshow:

    Mike, you should put an anchor tag above the image so the page doesn’t jump to the top everytime you click a link.

    I really enjoyed my brief stay in Seattle a couple years back. Didn’t actually get to see much other than the inside of a hotel room, but it was a really nice hotel room.

    It’s kinda weird that all the links get marked as visited when I haven’t visited them yet… I understand why that happens, and I’m not sure how you’d change it, nor if it is even worth changing, but just an observation!

    Thanks Seth. That is now fixed as well. I need to remember to test in non-Safari browsers!

    I just added a question mark to the href and it’s all good now. Now none of the links show up as visited, which is the desired behavior.

Video of 14 year old Jimmy Page in 1957: I watched “It Might Get Loud” last night and part of it featured this 53 year old video clip. Don’t miss the interview a couple minutes in where Jimmy says he wants to do biological research when he grows up. As for the movie, it was pretty good, if you’re a fan of the three guitarists. I personally didn’t think The Edge added much, but I’m not a huge U2 fan either. Jack White and Page, however, were great.

This is one of the best investigative sports articles I’ve ever read. Really, really fascinating. If you care at all about college football, you must read it. Two really interesting things I learned: Colorado really screwed themselves, and ESPN pretty much screwed the Pac-10.

We just launched msnbc.com’s new photoblog today. It’s pretty hot and it’s not even full featured yet. Peep it.

How Much Do Music Artists Earn Online? A great infographic showing how the digital distribution of music has sucked artists’ royalties almost completely dry. People have argued they were never healthy to begin with, but the difference here is major. The same is going to happen to every meatspace product that transitions to digital. The iPad isn’t going to save content royalties.
